What's inside

Both puzzles come straight from our book Winter Word Search for Seniors, so you see exactly what is inside. Each one fills a whole page with a roomy 12 by 12 grid and 12 familiar winter words. There is nothing about Christmas in them, so you can print them all season long, from the first snow until spring. Words run only across, down or diagonally down, never backwards, so the puzzles stay relaxing from the first word to the last.

  • Grandma's Winter Kitchen: biscuits, dumplings, cinnamon, molasses and the kettle on the stove.
  • Snowed In for the Evening: firewood, a flannel quilt, candlelight, slippers and a crossword by the mantel.

Ways to enjoy them

On a snow day

When the weather keeps everyone indoors, leave a few copies and a cup of pencils on the kitchen table. Grandparents and grandchildren can work on the same puzzle together, and it turns a long gray afternoon into a calm one.

In assisted living or a nursing home

Activity directors can print as many copies as they need for a winter group session. January and February are long months for residents, and a fresh puzzle makes an easy, low-prep activity. The large letters and familiar words make the puzzles easy to start, and the answer page makes it simple to help anyone who gets stuck.

On a visit with an older parent

Bring two printed copies and do them side by side. It is an easy way to share an unhurried hour together. For more ideas, see our list of quiet activities to enjoy with elderly parents.

Printing tips

Print on standard US letter paper and choose "fit to page" in your printer settings. If the puzzles are for someone with low vision, a bright reading lamp beside the chair helps more than overhead lighting. Our guide to puzzles for low vision has more tips.
